Most of the singles Muddy Waters recorded for the Aristocrat and Chess labels during the period 1947-55 reflect the stripped-down basics of the Chicago blues as it was played in the late 1940s. Waters’ bottleneck tracks are spare, haunting and, quite frankly, perfect electrified country blues. These songs are also significantly less melodic than the material released in the mid-1950s. Muddy’s guitar work is earthy and throbbing, never superfluous. The blues he sings is gritty, smokey, seductive and clearly unforgettable. His voice is front and center, hollering and growling through 12-bar progressions accompanied just by the bass of Ernest “Big” Crawford, plus an excellent harmonica played by the great Little Walter, as well as some occasional drums… and nothing more.
